A fabulous performance. Only Bernstein with the Vienna Phil rivals this. Furtwangler’s tempos are perfect throughout and the slow movement is not too slow at all. In fact this the one slow movement of a Haydn symphony where slower is better - heartbreakingly beautiful. Forget about HIP practice comparisons - given hits account those are meaningless. Give me this recording any day over most of what has come out afterwards.

I think this is a manipulated copy of Lipatti and Galliera, unlike Dvorak to have been "confirmed" by Oswald Kabasta and Munich Philharmonic, which wire recording (wire recording in 1944 not magnetophon?) I trust by Furtwängler.

Can you let me know which vinyl or CD you refer to for this (great) restoration? I have Philips CD and Relief vinyl (I don't have Relief CD), and I haven't had an opportunity to listen to the Relief version so far. If this restoration was based on Relief, I have no hesitation to reclaim that this is not belonging to Kabasta but to Furtwängler. Hint: This is a wire recording not a Magnetophon recording (ex. 1941 Vienna Bruckner 4th although fragments)

This is just wonderful. I do not like all these endless comparisons, but I just listened to Haitink's rendition of this symphony. I like Furtwangler's interpretation so much more!

Gosh I just love his voice. I always have. My paternal grandfather was a huge fan of his and brought back every record he could find from Europe after he passed away.
